To get your business cited by ChatGPT, make your site reachable by OpenAI's search crawler, publish pages that answer your buyers' exact questions with specifics, and get your brand onto the third-party pages ChatGPT already cites for those questions. ChatGPT cites web pages when it searches the web, which OpenAI says it does automatically "when your question would benefit from current information." Buyer questions about products, prices and alternatives are the kind that need current information.
Then measure, and do it more than once. ChatGPT rarely gives the same answer twice, so count how often you're named, recommended and cited across many runs of the same question. Be wary of anyone who promises a spot. OpenAI's own help article says: "Placement is not guaranteed."
Some people call this SEO for ChatGPT or ChatGPT SEO. I reread OpenAI's documentation and the main studies in October 2026 for this guide. Below is what OpenAI documents, a seven-step method you can run with a spreadsheet, what doesn't work, and how long it takes.
Named, recommended or cited: what you actually want
When people say "show up in ChatGPT," they mean one of four things. I track them separately because they're worth different amounts and need different fixes.
| Outcome | What it looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Named | Your brand appears in the answer, perhaps in a list of eight. | The buyer hears your name, but maybe with no endorsement or an outdated price. |
| Recommended | The answer suggests you for the buyer's situation: "For a 10-person agency, Your Brand fits because..." | The outcome closest to a sale, and the hardest to win. |
| Cited to someone else's page | A source link points to a review site, a list article or a Reddit thread that mentions you. | That page shapes what ChatGPT says about you. If it's wrong or stale, the answer will be too, and any click goes there. |
| Cited to your own page | A source link points to a URL you control. | You control the facts ChatGPT draws from, and the click lands on your site. |
These outcomes don't always arrive together. In an Ahrefs experiment across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, 43% of the answers that cited Ahrefs' pages promoting its own conference never mentioned the conference. The assistants used the page as research and recommended other events. Ahrefs sells SEO tools, so this is vendor research, but it makes the point: a citation is not a recommendation.
Your own pages are also the minority of what gets cited. A University of Toronto preprint found that for questions about well-known brands, 93.5% of the links ChatGPT cited were earned media, meaning other people's sites, and 6.5% were the brands' own. Most of what ChatGPT says about you is built from pages you don't control.
Buyers already ask. OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week. Pew found 42% of US adults use AI chatbots to search for information. In a G2 survey of 1,076 software buyers, 51% said they now start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, though G2 sells reviews and has a stake in the answer.
The name in the answer may matter more than the link. On Google, Pew measured clicks on links inside AI summaries on 1% of visits.
How ChatGPT search finds and picks sources
OpenAI documents less than most guides suggest. Here's what it says in its help article on web search, its crawler documentation and its launch post.
- ChatGPT decides whether to search. It "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information," and users can also turn Search on by hand. Responses that use web search "may include citations."
- It rewrites the question. ChatGPT "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" and may send more specific follow-up queries after reading the first results. It may add your general location, taken from your IP address, and saved memories.
- It sends those queries to providers. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses "third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners." The providers whose privacy policies the help article links are Microsoft and Shopify. Partners include news publishers such as Reuters, and OpenAI has had access to Reddit's data API since 2024.
- It draws on its own crawler. OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features." Sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links."
- It ranks and cites. OpenAI says ChatGPT "ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information." That sentence is all it publishes about how web results are ranked.
Two other OpenAI agents get confused with OAI-SearchBot. GPTBot collects training data, and OpenAI says you can allow OAI-SearchBot "in order to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot." ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a person asks for it and "is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search."
What OpenAI doesn't say: which provider handles which query, whether Google results play any part, how many pages ChatGPT reads before answering, or why it cites one page over another. Everything else written about ChatGPT ranking factors, including here, comes from outside studies that observe answers. They show association, not cause.
How to get ChatGPT to cite and recommend your business, step by step
Step 1: List the questions your buyers ask
Start with 10 to 30 questions a buyer asks before choosing a product like yours. Five types cover most commercial questions.
| Type | Example | Where to find the real wording |
|---|---|---|
| Best X for Y | best invoicing software for a 10-person agency | Sales call notes, "how did you hear about us" answers |
| Comparison | Your Brand vs Competitor A | Lost-deal reasons, competitors' comparison pages |
| Alternatives | alternatives to Competitor A for small teams | Reddit threads, review sites' alternatives pages |
| Pricing | how much does Your Brand cost for 25 users | Sales emails, pricing questions sent to support |
| How-to or problem | how do I chase late invoices automatically | Support tickets, Google Search Console queries |
Write each one the way a buyer would, with the context they'd add: team size, budget, industry, location. Context changes the answer.
Step 2: Check what ChatGPT says today
Before you change anything, record where you stand. Here's the manual method:
- Open ChatGPT logged out, in a private browser window. OpenAI says people who aren't signed in can use web search, and that saved memories can change the searches ChatGPT runs.
- Turn on Search from the tools menu, or type / and choose Search, so every answer uses the web and shows sources.
- Ask each question in a new chat, five times, spread over a few days.
- For each run, record whether you were named, recommended or cited to your own page, and which competitors and sources appeared.
Logged-out answers won't match every buyer's, but they give you a consistent baseline.
Why five runs and not one? Because answers move: SparkToro and Gumshoe, which sells AI tracking, had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts 2,961 times and found less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI returned the same list of brands twice. Presence was steadier than position: some brands appeared in most runs while the lists reshuffled. SparkToro's Rand Fishkin called visibility across many runs "a reasonable metric" and said "any tool that gives a 'ranking position in AI' is full of baloney."
Here is what the sheet looks like, as an invented example: the brands and sources are placeholders, not real data. The question is "best invoicing software for a 10-person agency."
| Run | Your Brand named | Recommended | Your page cited | Competitors named | Sources cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yes | No | No | Competitor A, Competitor B | Review site category page, Reddit thread |
| 2 | No | No | No | Competitor A, Competitor C | "Best invoicing tools" list on a marketing blog |
| 3 | Yes | Yes | No | Competitor A | Review site category page, "best tools" list |
| 4 | No | No | No | Competitor A, Competitor B | Reddit thread, Competitor A pricing page |
| 5 | Yes | No | Yes, pricing page | Competitor A, Competitor B | Your Brand pricing page, review site category page |
In this example, Your Brand was named in 3 of 5 runs, recommended in 1 and cited to its own page in 1. Competitor A appeared in all 5. The review site's category page was cited in 3 runs, so it's the first outside source to work on.
Step 3: Make sure OpenAI's search crawler can reach you
This is the one step OpenAI documents. To make a site eligible, its help article says, "allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl the site and confirm that the website host or content delivery network allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses."
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. If it blocks OAI-SearchBot by name, or blocks every crawler with a User-agent: * rule, add a group like this:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
A crawler with its own group ignores the general * group under the robots.txt standard, so copy over any paths you want kept private. Blocking GPTBot is a separate choice about training. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to affect search.
In 2026 the more common problem is the CDN. If your site is on Cloudflare, check these:
- In AI bot policies, Search should be set to Allow, and in AI Crawl Control, OAI-SearchBot should be allowed. Cloudflare split its AI settings into Search, Agent and Training in July 2026.
- To refuse AI training, use Disallow AI Training. Since September 15, 2026, Cloudflare's Block and Block on pages with ads settings also apply to Googlebot, Bingbot and Applebot, so "either setting impacts search as well as training."
- Read your live robots.txt. Bot Preference Sync, on by default for new customers since August 2026, puts rules from your dashboard ahead of your own.
Elsewhere, allow OpenAI's IP ranges in your firewall and check server logs for OAI-SearchBot requests that get a 200, not a 403 or a challenge page.
OpenAI doesn't say whether OAI-SearchBot runs JavaScript, so put prices and product details in the HTML your server sends. Because OpenAI lists Microsoft as a search provider, I'd also confirm in Bing Webmaster Tools that Bing has indexed your key pages, though that's my inference, not OpenAI's instruction. For every AI crawler and ready-made robots.txt files, see AI crawlers and robots.txt.
Step 4: Build or fix the page that answers each question
For each question in your sheet, pick the one page on your site that should answer it. If none exists, that's the gap. If one exists, compare it with the pages ChatGPT cited instead and note what they cover that yours doesn't.
| Question type | The page | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Best X for Y | A page for that use case or customer type | Who it's for and who it isn't, the features that matter in that case, the price at that size, a customer example you have permission to name |
| Comparison | An honest "Your Brand vs Competitor A" page | A side-by-side table, where the competitor is the better pick, both prices with a date, what switching involves |
| Alternatives | An alternatives page | Why people leave the incumbent, which option suits which need, your limits as well as your strengths |
| Pricing | Your pricing page | Every plan, what's included, usage limits, monthly and annual prices, extra costs, a "prices as of" date |
| How-to or problem | A guide | The steps, real screenshots, where your product helps and where it doesn't |
Put the answer first. In Kevin Indig's analysis of 18,012 ChatGPT citations from data supplied by Gauge, an AI visibility vendor, 44.2% came from the first 30% of a page. An even spread would put 30% there, so that's about 1.5 times more, not a rule.
Be specific: "Affordable plans for every team" gives ChatGPT nothing to repeat. A line that states the per-user price, the user limit, whether SSO is included and what support costs extra gives it facts to quote. Microsoft, whose Bing powers Copilot, advises that "examples, data, and cited sources help build trust when content is reused in AI-generated answers." Google's AI optimization guide asks for "non-commodity content."
Say who it's not for. A page that says no to some buyers is more believable when it says yes. Use evidence you can source: your own data with the method explained, customer results you're allowed to share, links to studies you quote.
Date it, and update it when the facts change. In Ahrefs' data, pages ChatGPT cited were on average 458 days newer than pages in organic search results. Don't fake it: a peer-reviewed 2025 study found a false "published on" date moved passages up as many as 95 places when language models reranked them, which is why re-dating an unchanged page is manipulation.
Build one strong page per question, not one per wording. Google's guide says creating pages for every query variation "to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses" breaks its scaled content abuse policy.
Step 5: Earn a place in the sources ChatGPT already cites
Go back to the sources column in your sheet. Those pages are where ChatGPT gets its picture of your category. Work from your own list, because industry averages move: Semrush found ChatGPT cited Reddit in close to 60% of responses in early August 2025 and about 10% by mid-September.
List articles are a common source for commercial questions. In Ahrefs' study of 750 prompts about software, products and agencies, "best X" lists were 43.8% of the page types ChatGPT cited, though Seer Interactive saw ChatGPT's citations of such pages fall 30% from December 2025 to January 2026.
| Source | What to do | What not to do |
|---|---|---|
| Review sites such as G2, Capterra or Trustpilot | Keep pricing and features on your profile current. Ask real customers for reviews after a good outcome. | Buy, swap or write reviews. |
| "Best X" list articles | Send the author accurate, current facts and offer a demo. Ask for a correction when a list has your price or features wrong. | Pay for a placement that isn't disclosed, or publish your own list that ranks you first. |
| Reddit threads | Answer questions in relevant threads under your real name, say where you work, and follow each subreddit's rules. | Use alternate accounts or ask staff to post as customers. |
| YouTube | Publish demos, walkthroughs and honest comparisons that answer the same buyer questions. | Upload a sales pitch that never answers the question. |
| Wikipedia | Leave it to independent editors, and only if your company meets Wikipedia's notability rules. | Write or edit your own article. Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline discourages it. |
Cited Reddit threads are often small: Semrush found most had fewer than 20 upvotes and 20 comments. On YouTube, Ahrefs found video mentions had the strongest correlation with AI brand mentions of anything it measured across 75,000 brands, about 0.737, and warned that correlation isn't causation.
None of this is proven to cause a recommendation. Google warns that "seeking inauthentic 'mentions'... isn't as helpful as it might seem," and Ahrefs' rule for self-promotional lists after its experiment was "don't crown yourself."
Step 6: If you sell products, send a product feed
Shopping answers work differently. OpenAI says product results "are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads," and that selection draws on "structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers" plus other third-party content.
- Shopify and Etsy catalogs are "already integrated," according to OpenAI's merchants page, and the shopping help article says Shopify stores need "no additional work."
- Other merchants can apply for a direct feed. A feed isn't required if ChatGPT can crawl your site, but OpenAI says "feeds give you greater control." Shopping is live for US users.
- When several stores sell the same product, OpenAI ranks them by "availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller."
- Review summaries come "from public websites," and "Reviews and ratings are not verified by OpenAI."
OpenAI stepped back from Instant Checkout in March 2026, and its Agentic Commerce Protocol now mainly carries product feeds for discovery from retailers such as Target, Sephora and Best Buy. The merchants page has a section headed "Get better placement in results," which is OpenAI describing its own system, not a promise.
Step 7: Measure the share of runs, over weeks
Re-run the same questions weekly with the same settings. For each question, track the share of runs that name you, recommend you and cite your page, next to the same numbers for your main competitors. One run going from absent to named means little, while a share that rises from 1 in 10 to 5 in 10 and holds for a month means more.
Expect churn even when you change nothing. Envoyra, which also sells AI visibility tracking, found that 79% of question and assistant pairs changed their brand list at least once over four weekly runs. Leaders held steady: HubSpot appeared in 305 of 368 answers about small-business CRMs. Small samples can't show small changes.
Clicks are a partial view. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, though that statement lived in a publisher FAQ OpenAI retired in October 2026. Since May 2026, Google Analytics 4 has an AI Assistant default channel that groups visits by AI referrers. Visits with no referrer and no tag still land in Direct, so that channel is a floor. I walk through the reports in how to track AI traffic in GA4.
October 2026 shows why. Search Engine Land reported that ChatGPT links stopped carrying the tag, that OpenAI confirmed a known bug, and that a fix began rolling out on October 15. Adobe's Cedric Huesler, looking at about 500 pages, measured roughly 31,000 fewer ChatGPT visits a day and 26,000 more direct visits during the gap. He suggests annotating October 8 to 15 in your reports.
For Google's side, Search Console's generative AI performance report, live for all sites since August 31, 2026, counts impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode. The same release added a setting that can exclude a site from those features, so check it's set to include. More on both in how to track AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Finally, ask new customers how they found you, with "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" as an option. It's crude, and it catches what analytics miss. If you want software to run the checks, I compared the options in the best AI visibility tools.
What doesn't work, or isn't proven
Much of the advice ranking for this topic repeats tactics with thin evidence behind them.
| Tactic | What the evidence says | What I'd do |
|---|---|---|
| Adding statistics and quotes for a "40% boost" | The 2023 GEO paper's best methods told GPT-3.5 to invent statistics, quotes and sources. It never tested live ChatGPT. | Add real numbers you can source. Never make one up. |
| llms.txt | Google Search ignores it. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity haven't said they read other sites' files. Ahrefs found 97% of 137,000 sites' files got no requests in May 2026. | Optional and low priority. See llms.txt explained. |
| Splitting pages into bite-sized chunks | Google's Danny Sullivan: "We don't want you to do that. We really don't." OpenAI hasn't said either way. | Write for readers, with clear headings. |
| Schema markup as a switch | Google says its AI features need no special schema. OpenAI's search docs don't mention it. | Keep accurate schema for normal search results. |
| Fake reviews, sock-puppet posts, paid mentions posing as opinions | Google says inauthentic mentions aren't "as helpful as it might seem." | Don't. Buyers who spot it stop trusting you. |
| Ranking yourself first in your own "best" list | In Ahrefs' experiment, 43% of answers that cited its self-promotional conference pages never mentioned the conference. | Fill real gaps accurately. |
| Changing the date without changing the page | False dates sway language models in lab tests. | Update when facts change. |
| Chasing one answer or a "rank" | SparkToro found less than a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same brand list twice. | Track the share of runs. |
What the GEO paper actually tested
The 2023 paper that introduced the term generative engine optimization (GEO) is the source of the "up to 40%" figure on many agency pages. The researchers had GPT-3.5 answer queries from the top five Google results, rewrote one source with nine methods, and measured how much of the answer came from it.
The paper's public code shows how the three best methods worked. Statistics Addition told the model to add statistics "even if hypothetical," and Quotation Addition asked for quotes "even though fake and artificial." Cite Sources said: "You may invent these sources but ensure they sound plausible." So the gains measured how a 2023 summarizer reacted to invented evidence, not whether real evidence earns citations in ChatGPT today.
The same methods also lowered visibility by 20 to 30% for sources that already ranked first. I still put real, sourced numbers on pages because buyers want them. I don't expect a percentage lift from it, and nobody should promise you one.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
OpenAI publishes one timeline: robots.txt changes for OAI-SearchBot take about 24 hours to affect search. Everything else depends on when OpenAI and its search providers crawl your new page, and on when other publishers update theirs, which you don't control.
The best public data I've found is a single vendor experiment, Ahrefs' from 2026. After Ahrefs published self-promotional pages for a new conference on February 13, Microsoft Copilot named the conference in 39% of answers to the query it charted in March, 57% in April and 65% in May. ChatGPT never named it for that query. For Ahrefs' established product, 94% of new mentions came from answers citing other people's pages, a sign of how much a known brand rides on what others write.
Even once you're cited, it flickers. In the same experiment, a page was cited on about one in three eligible days between its first and last citation, and about a quarter of citations appeared once and never again.
How I plan, which I can't source: access fixes show within days, new or rebuilt pages within weeks to a few months, and third-party presence over months. I judge progress on four to eight weeks of repeated runs, never on one good day.
Frequently asked questions
How do you optimize content for ChatGPT?
Answer the buyer's question in the first lines of the page, then back it up with specifics: dated prices, who the product suits and who it doesn't, comparison tables and evidence you can source. Make sure that content is in the HTML your server sends and that OAI-SearchBot isn't blocked. There is no ChatGPT-only format.
What is SEO for AI called?
Generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO) and AI SEO all describe the same work: getting found, used and named by systems that answer questions instead of listing links. Google's guide says optimizing for its AI search "is still SEO." I compare the terms in GEO vs SEO vs AEO.
Is SEO dead now with AI?
No. ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers, and Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems." A page that can't be crawled and indexed can't be a cited source in either. What has changed is that third-party pages about you can matter as much as your own rankings.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses "third-party search providers" plus partner content, and its help article links the privacy policies of Microsoft and Shopify as those providers. It doesn't name Google. ChatGPT also has its own crawler, so let OAI-SearchBot in and check that Bing has indexed your key pages.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Not in the answer itself, according to OpenAI. ChatGPT has shown ads since a US test began on February 9, 2026, and by October 21 they ran in 89 countries, in labeled units below the answer. OpenAI says "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you." I found no independent audit of that claim.
Does llms.txt or schema help?
Neither is a proven lever for ChatGPT. Google says its search ignores llms.txt and its AI features need no special schema, OpenAI hasn't said it reads other sites' llms.txt files, and Ahrefs found 97% of 137,000 sites' files got no requests in May 2026. Accurate schema still helps normal search results, and product feeds matter for ChatGPT shopping.
How do I know if ChatGPT mentions my brand?
Ask it your buyers' questions with Search on, logged out, five or more times each, and note each time if you're named, recommended and cited. Repeat weekly with the same settings. Analytics only show clicks, through utm_source=chatgpt.com and GA4's AI Assistant channel, so they miss mentions that didn't lead to a visit.
Start with ten questions this week
Pick the ten buyer questions closest to a sale. Run each one five times in ChatGPT with Search on, fill in the sheet, and check that OAI-SearchBot can reach your site. That baseline tells you whether your first job is access, your own pages or the outside sources ChatGPT trusts instead.
If you'd like a head start, the free AI visibility report checks 5 of your buyer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and shows where you're named, recommended or cited and who shows up instead. No card needed.
