To track Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, use three layers. Search Console's generative AI performance report shows how often Google displayed links to your site in those features, as impressions only. Repeated checks of your buyer queries, by hand or with a tool, show whether the answers name you, recommend you or cite your pages. Analytics shows the clicks, but Google counts them as ordinary organic search, so unlike visits from ChatGPT, you can't split them out.
No single layer is enough. Google's report has no clicks and no queries, one manual check is a single sample of an answer that keeps changing, and analytics can't tell an AI Overview click from a blue-link click. I reread Google's documentation and the main studies in October 2026 for this guide. I also make InkieAI, one of the tools compared below, and I've held it to the same standard as the others.
The three layers of AI Overview tracking
| Layer | What it tells you | What it misses | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search Console's generative AI performance report | How often Google showed a link to your site in AI Overviews or AI Mode, by page | Clicks, queries, whether you were named or recommended, which competitors appeared | Free |
| Answer checks, by hand or with a tool | Whether the answer names, recommends or cites you for your queries, and who appears instead | How many people saw that answer | Free by hand; trackers from $29 a month |
| Search Console's Performance report and GA4 | Clicks and conversions from Google organic search, AI features included | Which clicks came from an AI Overview or AI Mode | Free |
Most tools sold as AI Overview trackers cover the second layer. They see the results page the way a searcher does. Google's report and your analytics cover the other two.
How AI Overviews and AI Mode choose sources
Google documents more than OpenAI does for ChatGPT, though it still doesn't say why one page is cited over another. From its page on AI features and your website and its AI optimization guide:
- Both features are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems" and retrieve "relevant, up-to-date web pages from our Search index."
- Both "may use a 'query fan-out' technique," running related searches across subtopics, so a page can be cited for a question it doesn't rank for.
- "To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." There are "no additional technical requirements."
- You don't need "new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup," and there is "no special schema.org structured data" to add.
- "A site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible." That setting reached every site on August 31, 2026, and defaults to include.
- "AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary." AI Overviews also "often don't trigger."
So track the two features as separate surfaces, and record "no AI Overview on this query" as a result.
Do AI Overviews cite pages outside the top 10?
Often. Ahrefs analyzed 863,000 keyword results pages and 4 million AI Overview URLs and published in March 2026. Counting standard blue links only, 37.1% of cited URLs ranked in the top 10 for the same keyword, 26.2% ranked 11 to 100, and 36.7% weren't in the top 100. YouTube URLs were 5.6% of all AI Overview citations.
Ahrefs' July 2025 study put the top-10 share near 76%, but it counted only the three most visible citations, and Ahrefs has since "improved our parsing methodology." So the drop isn't a clean trend, and since Ahrefs sells an AI tracker, this is vendor research. The lesson still holds: watching your blue-link rank alone misses many AI Overview citations.
How to track AI Overviews and AI Mode, step by step
Step 1: Pick the queries to track
Start with 20 to 30, from two places. First, searches that already bring you traffic: in Search Console's Performance report, pick queries close to a sale, plus any where clicks fell while impressions held. That pattern can mean an AI Overview now answers the question, though it has other causes too.
Second, questions buyers ask before choosing: "best X for Y," comparisons, alternatives and pricing. Google says AI Mode suits "queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed," which describes most of these. Type each query the same way every time. In AI Mode, Google counts a follow-up as "essentially performing a new query," so track the opening question.
Step 2: Set up Search Console's generative AI report
- Verify your site in Search Console if you haven't. It's free.
- Open Settings, then Search generative AI, and confirm the site includes its links and content. Child properties inherit from their parent unless someone changed them, so check the domain property too.
- Open the Generative AI performance report under Performance. If it's missing, Google says your site usually "hasn't received enough impressions" yet, or it's excluded.
- Switch the table to Pages and export it each month.
Know its limits. An impression means a link to your site was "shown to a user in a generative AI feature." The dimensions are pages, countries, dates and devices. The help page lists no queries, no clicks and no way to separate AI Overviews from AI Mode. Because it counts links, a mention of your brand without a link doesn't appear at all.
To estimate clicks, look up those pages in the regular Performance report, where Google counts AI feature clicks "within the 'Web' search type" alongside every other click. There, an AI Overview "occupies a single position" and every link in it shares that position, which can make a page's average position look better than its blue-link rank.
Step 3: Check the answers yourself
- Open a private window, signed out of Google. Results vary with "search history, location, and so on," Google says.
- Note the city or country and device. A check from Stockholm tells you little about what a buyer in Chicago sees.
- Search the query. Record whether an AI Overview appeared, then expand it and open the source links.
- Ask the same query in AI Mode and record it the same way.
- Repeat on two or three more days before drawing conclusions.
Answers move. In a SparkToro study with Gumshoe, which sells AI tracking, 600 volunteers ran 12 prompts 2,961 times on ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode. There was less than a 1 in 100 chance of the same brand list twice. Presence was steadier than order: one agency appeared in 85 of 95 Google AI answers.
Step 4: Record four outcomes, not one
| Outcome | What it looks like | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Named | Your brand appears in the answer text. | Sources mention you, though the answer may not endorse or link to you. |
| Recommended | The answer suggests you for the searcher's situation. | The outcome closest to a sale, and the hardest to win. |
| Cited to your page | A source link points to a URL you own. | Your page feeds the answer. Search Console counts this as an impression. |
| Cited to someone else's page | A source link points to a review site, list article, forum thread or video. | That page shapes the answer. Note the URL: it's where to work next. |
Here's a log, as an invented example with placeholder brands and sources. The query is "best invoicing software for small agencies," checked from Chicago on desktop.
| Check | Surface | Named | Recommended | Your page cited | Other sources cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | AI Overview | Yes | No | No | Review site category page, Competitor A pricing page |
| Day 1 | AI Mode | Yes | Yes | Yes, comparison page | Review site category page, Reddit thread |
| Day 3 | AI Overview | None shown | n/a | n/a | n/a |
| Day 3 | AI Mode | No | No | No | "Best invoicing tools" list on a marketing blog, review site category page |
Across the 3 answers, Your Brand was named in 2, recommended in 1 and cited to its own page in 1. The review site's category page was cited in all 3, so it's the first outside source to work on. Over weeks, report these as shares next to your main competitors' numbers, which is AI share of voice.
Step 5: Decide when an AI Overview tracker is worth it
By hand, 25 queries on two surfaces, checked three times, is 150 answers per round. At about two minutes each, my rough estimate, that's five hours. Fine for a baseline. A tracker earns its fee once you want weekly history, several countries or side-by-side competitors.
AI Mode tracking is where entry plans differ most, so check whether it's included or an add-on. Google's warning applies to every tool, mine included: "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems." Trackers read the same answers a searcher sees. SE Ranking, for one, says it collects answers through the browser interface, not APIs.
I read each vendor's pricing page and docs in October 2026. Prices are monthly, as of October 2026.
| Tool | Entry price a month | AI Overviews at entry | AI Mode at entry | Queries at entry | Checks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI | $29 ($25 billed annually) | Included | Add-on, $9 a month | 15 | Daily |
| SE Visible by SE Ranking | $99 (20% off annually) | Included | Included | 200 | Daily |
| Rankscale | $99 for Pro | Included, paid in credits | Included, paid in credits | Unlimited, within 1,200 credits | Hourly to monthly |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99 | Not named for prompt tracking | Included | 25 | Daily |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | In paid Ahrefs plans; packages from €47 | Included | Included | 5 a day on Lite | Daily, weekly or monthly |
| Peec AI | $95 | If one of your 3 models | If one of your 3 models | 50 | Daily |
| InkieAI | $99 ($79 billed annually) | Included | Included | 30 | Weekly; every 3 days on higher plans |
| Scrunch | $250 | Included | Enterprise only | 125 | Not stated |
| Profound | Custom; no self-serve plan | On the free trial | Enterprise only | 50 on the trial | Daily |
Ahrefs showed me euro prices from Stockholm, so US prices may differ. Peec charges $35 a month on Starter for a fourth model. HubSpot's $50 AEO tool tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, not Google's AI features.

How to rank in AI Overviews and AI Mode
"Rank" is loose here, since Search Console gives every link in an AI Overview one shared position. The real question is what makes a page more likely to be cited, and Google's guide answers plainly: "optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." Gary Illyes said in July 2025, as relayed by an attendee: "To get your content to appear in AI Overview, simply use normal SEO practices."
Google's pages recommend letting Googlebot crawl "by any CDN or hosting infrastructure," keeping important content "in textual form," matching structured data to visible text, and keeping Merchant Center and Business Profile details current. Its guide asks for "non-commodity content" and says pages for every query variation, built "to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses," break its scaled content abuse policy. It says you don't need llms.txt or "chunking."
Outside studies add patterns. They show association, not proof that a change causes a citation:
- Ranking matters less than many assume: in the Ahrefs data above, more than 60% of cited URLs weren't in the top 10.
- In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, YouTube mentions had the strongest correlation with brand mentions in AI answers, about 0.737. Ahrefs notes "correlation isn't causation." Mentions in AI Overviews and AI Mode correlated at 0.821, high but not identical, so track both.
- In Ahrefs' freshness study, AI Overviews cited pages 16 days older than organic results on average, while ChatGPT cited much newer ones. This data gives no reason to re-date pages.
- Ahrefs found "best X" list articles "slightly more prominent" in AI Overviews than in ChatGPT for software and agency prompts.
Nobody can guarantee a spot. Google says "Indexing and serving isn't guaranteed." The work that tends to help is what I describe in how to get cited by ChatGPT: pages that answer your buyers' exact questions with specifics, and accurate facts on the outside pages AI answers already cite.
Can you track AI Overview clicks?
Not separately. Search Console counts them in the Performance report's Web search type with no filter to isolate them. GA4 added an AI Assistant default channel on May 13, 2026, but Google's channel definitions leave AI Overviews and AI Mode out, so those visits stay in Organic Search. ChatGPT is different: its referrer tells you where the visit came from, as I cover in how to track AI traffic in GA4.
For Google's AI features, use proxies. Compare organic clicks to the pages with the most AI impressions over the same months, and ask new customers how they found you, with "Google's AI answer" as an option.
Expect fewer clicks per view. Pew Research Center found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary against 15% without, and a link inside the summary on 1%. Ahrefs measured click-through for the top-ranking page 58% lower than expected when an AI Overview showed.
Seer Interactive, an agency, found brands cited in an AI Overview had 0.70% organic click-through against 0.52% when not cited, but says "we cannot definitively prove that citation causes higher CTRs." Its 2026 update saw click-through on AI Overview queries rebound from 1.3% to 2.4% between December 2025 and February 2026, and warns against forecasting from two months. With so few clicks, being named in the answer may matter as much as the link.
Common mistakes that hide you from AI Overviews
| Mistake | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| nosnippet or max-snippet:0 on important pages | Google's robots meta tag spec says nosnippet "will also prevent the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode." The page loses its regular snippet too, and with it its eligibility as a supporting link. | Use them only where you want content kept out. To hide one section, use data-nosnippet. |
| Search Console control set to exclude | Your links and content "won't appear" in AI Overviews, AI Mode or Discover's AI features. A child property can inherit exclude from its parent. | Check Settings, then Search generative AI, on every property. Changes take 1 to 2 days, sometimes longer. |
| Cloudflare's Block or Block on pages with ads, chosen to stop AI training | Since September 15, 2026, both apply to Googlebot, Bingbot and Applebot, so "either setting impacts search as well as training." | Use Disallow AI Training. Check server logs for Googlebot getting a 200, not a 403 or challenge page. |
| Blocking Google-Extended to leave AI Overviews | It "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search." It does remove you from grounding in the Gemini app. | Use the Search Console control to leave AI Overviews and AI Mode. |
| Treating one screenshot as a rank | Answers change between runs, so one good result can vanish the next day. | Report the share of repeated checks that name, recommend or cite you. |

Frequently asked questions
How do I track AI Overviews?
Use Search Console's generative AI performance report for impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Run repeated, signed-out checks of your queries, by hand or with a tracker, to see whether answers name, recommend or cite you. Read clicks in analytics, where they're mixed with the rest of organic search.
How do I track AI Overview clicks?
You can't isolate them. Search Console counts them in the Performance report's Web search type, and GA4 keeps them in Organic Search rather than its AI Assistant channel. The best proxies are organic clicks to pages with AI impressions, and asking customers how they found you.
Is AI Overview discontinued?
No. On August 31, 2026, Google rolled out a Search Console report for AI Overview and AI Mode impressions to every site, plus a setting to opt out. If you don't see one for a query, Google says AI Overviews "often don't trigger."
How do I get ranked in AI Overviews?
Make sure the page is indexed, can show with a snippet, and that your site is included in Search Console's Search generative AI setting. After that, Google says it's normal SEO: specific, helpful content Googlebot can crawl. No one can guarantee a citation.
How do I check my AI ranking?
There's no stable AI ranking to check, because answers change between runs. Measure the share of repeated checks that name, recommend or cite you. SparkToro's Rand Fishkin called that "a reasonable metric" and said "any tool that gives a 'ranking position in AI' is full of baloney."
Can I opt out of AI Overviews without leaving Google Search?
Yes. Set the Search generative AI control in Search Console to exclude. Google says it isn't "used as a ranking or inclusion signal affecting other parts of Search." nosnippet also keeps pages out but removes regular snippets too.
Start with Search Console and ten queries
This week, confirm the Search generative AI setting is on include and export the pages from the generative AI report. Then run ten buyer queries through AI Overviews and AI Mode, signed out, three times each, and log named, recommended, cited to you and cited to others. That baseline shows whether your first job is access, your own pages or the outside sources Google cites instead.
For a head start, the free AI visibility report checks 5 of your buyer questions across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and shows where you're named, recommended or cited and who appears instead. No card needed.
